Yusuf Islam (in English: Yusuf Islam, July 21, 1948), known by his previous stage name Kat Stevens (Cat Stevens) Is a British singer-songwriter,
And social activist. His debut album was released in 1967 and was a huge success, after which he released more albums and many hits that became popular in the world,
Among them "Matthew and Son", "Wild World", "Peace Train", "The First Cut Is the Deepest" and more. His early songs combine rock, pop and folk, and in the 21st century he also incorporated influences of Arabic music.
In 1977 Stevens converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. In 1979 he sold his guitar collection at auction and donated the proceeds to charity,
And then interrupted his musical career and devoted his time to educational activities and philanthropy, especially in Muslim communities. For his work he received two honorary doctorates and several awards.

Beginning of career

In 1965 he recorded a number of demo songs, including "The First Cut Is the Deepest" and signed a contract with a record company.
He started performing in clubs and cafes, and chose the stage name "Kat Stevens" which sounded catchy to him.
His songs from his debut album "Matthew and Son" immediately became hits in the UK, including "I Love My Dog" and the theme song.
He also wrote a number of hits for other artists, including the hit "Here Comes My Baby" by the Thermalos.
He then released another album featuring the hit "The First Cut is the Deepest" which won many cover versions. During that time he recorded and performed with many artists, including Jimmy Hendrix and Engelbert Humperdinck.
At the age of 19 Stevens contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized in critical condition at a hospital in West Sussex. The treatment lasted several months, followed by a year of recovery.
Following this experience he wrote the song Trouble. During this time Stevens began to search for the meaning of life, and studied meditation, yoga and metaphysics.
He started reading about other religions, and became a vegetarian. During this time he wrote a large part of his poems.

Performances and albums

In 1970, after recovering from tuberculosis, Stevens decided to change the orchestral musical style that characterized his first two albums.
He broke up with his producer, Mike Hurst, and turned to more personal folk rock.
After recording his blood with his new songs he signed a recording contract with Island Records and began collaborating with a new producer, Paul Smallwell-Smith, who was the Hardsbirds bassist.
Stevens' songs from 1970 to 1973 brought him to new heights of popularity, not only in Britain but also in the United States.
And in many countries around the world. On the producer's recommendation, he began working with guitarist Alon Davis, whose guitar guitar has become a hallmark of many of his new songs.
